Notes from North Essex Church – 20th April 2008
As the East of England slowly dragged itself into summer, with lengthening days and dryer weather, we decided to spend the afternoon visiting a couple of locations with the hope of finding some more sites suitable for our EVP work.
Whilst this is not a full report, we think that it would be of interest if we wrote our notes independently and publish both sets on site.
Laura’s Notes:
We decided to pay this church an afternoon visit for a quick EVP session. The weather was sunny, but by time we reached the location the sky was overcast, with rain in the air.
![]() | We entered the church grounds via what we first thought was the main gate. This was next to the roadside where we’d parked. We later realised that this was a smaller entrance, the main one being on the opposite side of the church, away from the main road. |
I went in first, quickly followed by Mark.
I walked on ahead, down the pathway toward the church and through the graveyard when, about halfway towards the church itself, I stopped and picked up on a female with the name ‘M____ E____’ together with a date. I’m not sure if it was connected to this female, although I think that it may be possible.
| Further on along the path and to the left of the church, I picked up on another spirit, this time a male by the name of ‘Sir A______ ______’. This was by the garden of remembrance. |
|
I tried to keep the contact going with this male spirit by trying to find out more information about him. However, the only other information that I could get was a date.
Whilst walking around the back of the church, I picked up on the first spirit once again (the female). She had two children, one was a boy, by the name of Shane / Shayman (Shaman?), which was a first name.
This was the only other information I was able to pick up with this spirit.
I also felt there was something to do with the burial of this lady, what I am not sure of, but it was bugging me.
Around the other side of church, as we were finishing up, I kept getting another male by the name of Connor / Colin, with an Irish connection.
Overall, the location for me was interesting, especially for a first visit there. We’ll definitely be going back in the hope of putting some of the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together regarding the spirits that I made contact with.

Mark’s Notes:
We’d spent a couple of days researching earlier in the week and had identified four potential locations in Essex that looked promising on paper, two to the North West of the county, the others to the South.
In the end we decided to head northwards and, if time allowed, finish the day at the locations to the south.
We found the first location, a church on the M11 corridor, without much trouble and parked up alongside the graveyard. As we unpacked our equipment, we noticed a couple of people milling around in the churchyard, but generally things were still quiet.
I turned on the audio recording device and off we went into the church yard, Laura pressing ahead with purpose about 10 yards in front of me.
Almost at once Laura paused and waited for me to catch up with her. When I did she told me that she had picked up the name of a female and then a date, that she didn’t know was connected to the female or not.
As we walked past the garden of remembrance Laura picked up another spirit, this time a male, along with another date.
I stopped to take some photographs, whilst Laura continued on her walk. After a couple of minutes I caught up with her again, only to be told this time, that the answer (or solution) to the first spirit would be found on a white grave stone.
![]() | Still with the audio running, we explored the church yard, but were unable to locate any such grave marker this time. Try as we might, we couldn't locate a white grave stone that would offer an answer to the mystery. |
However, as an interesting coincidence, two days earlier I had been toying with purchasing an old book from a famous online auction site. The author was one I’d never read before, nor every really having an interest in. As we turned one corner imagine my surprise to be faced with the gravestone of the very same author.
Drawing the session to a close, we headed back to the car to the next location a couple of miles away. However, the sky was getting darker and within minutes of us arriving at the second location the heavens opened, curtailing our efforts for the day.
Sadly, upon reviewing the audio, we found that we hadn’t been successful in our efforts to record any EVP. However, both locations were worthy of further attention at a future date.
Mark.
